“And Gloomy Gus doesn’t take too kindly to intruders,” Delmer continues with a grimace. “Or so they say.”

“Terrible things or not, we owe it to Shane Shandar to go into the crevasse and find him. He may still be alive,” I say with as much confidence as I can muster.

“But what about Gloomy Gus?” Oggie asks, a look of worry on his face.

I shoot Delmer a glance as if to ask, How true are these stories? I have no reason to believe they’re tall tales, either. I mean, come on, between the king delver and the cragnark, not to mention the flying suction-faced creatures, the stories about behemoths and monsters in the Abyss haven’t exactly been fabricated. If they’re real, maybe this Gloomy Gus is too, in which case, I think I’ve had my fill of exploring old wizard lairs.

“What do you think?” I ask the others. “Shane Shandar could be hurt.”

“Let’s go,” Daz responds in an instant. “We’ll unload the gondola and set out right away.”

“I’ll get the torches,” Mindy says, adjusting her backpack.

“Oggie? Zeek?” I query.

They look at each other for a second, and then Oggie rolls his eyes. “Of course I’m in. But I can’t speak for that guy.”

“Me too,” Zeek says.

Like a well-oiled machine, we pick up all of our scattered backpacks and gear.

“We’re ready to go the Dwark, Mr. Shovelwise!” Mindy remarks.

“Now hold up just one minute,” Delmer says. “I’ll lead ya to the Dwark first thing in the morning. But before that, you must permit me to invite ya into my home for a fine meal! My wife and I would be pleased as punch to rustle up some of these har dusknuggets. They’re mighty delicious!”

Oggie grins widely. “I mean, we can’t pass up a fine meal, am I right?”

The others and I shrug. “I am pretty hungry,” I say.

“Yer no use to yer friend tired and hungry! Come along and follow me! My quobs and I know the way like the back of our foots.” Delmer chuckles and leads us into the dark with his dim lantern, which on closer inspection looks to be a glowworm sitting comfortably on a beanbag within a glass jar.
